Seeing The Effects Of Climate Change and What We Can Do About It
If the Climate Change debate has gotten you all flustered and your not sure what scientists to believe, let these pictures speak to and allow you to see the effects Of Climate Change. Here is a collection of pictures from around the world that shows the devastating effects occurring to our planet.
What can we do about it? There are many simple, easy things we can do everyday to help and a great guide I found is the book, True Green: 100 Everyday Ways you Can Contribute to a Healthier Planet.
Here are some highlights from the quick and easy tips in the book….
1. Step up to the line
An electric clothes dryer generates more than 6.5 pounds of greenhouse gases per load. By using a clothesline you can eliminate all of that! If the clothesline doesn’t work for you, make sure your washing machine’s spin cycle removes as much excess water as possible, dry only full loads, and keep the dryer’s lint filter clean so it operates at maximum efficiency. You can also check out the Energy Star website for available appliance rebates.
2. In the can
Indoor air can be 3 times more polluted than outdoor air! Conventional paints are often times the main culprit and this is because fossil fuels are the primary ingredients. Greenhouse gases, toxic waste, and air pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you are going to be repainting your house make sure to buy and use natural paints and finished with low to zero-VOC content.
3. Go with the grain
Wood is a perfect renewable and sustainable resources as long as it it being harvested correctly. It is important that when you are buying wood products that you make sure the wood used was harvested sustainable. Look for the Forest Stewardship Council certified timer label. By purchasing sustainable wood you can help save old-growth forests, reduce greenhouse effects and support a sustainable industry.
4. Curtain call
You can cut heat transfer through windows by a third if you install heavy, lined drapes with pelmets or valances. Shade east- and west- facing windows with insulated devices such as blinds or shutters. Cover south-facing windows with suitably angled eaves or awnings that provide shade during summer and light during winter.
5. Trade fair
Look for Fair Trade products, including coffee, tea, cocoa, and chocolate to help promote sustainable agriculture, reduce inequality, and healthier eating.
These are just a few of the many tips in the great book True Green: 100 Everyday Ways you Can Contribute to a Healthier Planet,
Enjoy the book and tell me what you think and if you have any other ideas.
